Sportsman, dilettante, racer, comedian are all words that have been used at some point in time to describe the irascible Anatoly Arutunoff (ah-roo-TOON-off). Born into a wealthy family, “Toly” has never made any bones about the fact that his family’s affluence has afforded him the opportunity to feed a lifetime’s passion for cars and racing. From the Targa Florio to Sebring and Daytona, Toly’s done them all and even built and run his own racetrack in Hallett, Oklahoma to boot. Casey Annis had lunch with the voluble Arutunoff in Tulsa to learn more about his fascinating racing life…but it’s taken us several years to sort out all of Toly’s entertaining, but rambling answers!

10 Questions With Toly Arutunoff
Toly Arutunoff (who goes by username anatolyarutunoff on BaT) has been described as a raconteur, a bon vivant, and a real-life Walter Mitty. Around here we know him as a consummate enthusiast who piloted sports and racing cars in events like the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia during a golden age of motorsports, when a privateer could be competitive against factory-backed teams. He’s owned a series of one-off and custom sports cars that have been shown at Pebble Beach and elsewhere, and remains in possession of a small collection of unique vehicles, including a few he won here. He’s become an active member of the BaT community in recent years, and we are always thrilled when he shares a story or advice in a comment thread. 1. Where are you based, and what are you up to these days? Do you still race?
I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As I’m missing part of my right leg at the moment, I only ‘race’ automatic tranny cars, i.e. my T-Birds—one I got on BaT a couple years ago is for sale, by the way!
