Series of children's travel books
This Is... is a series of children's travel books written and illustrated by Czech author Miroslav Sasek between 1959 and 1974.[1]
Sasek originally intended to write three books (This Is Paris, This Is London and This Is Rome); however, as a result of those titles' popularity, Sasek ultimately extended the series to 18 books.
Four of the This Is books were adapted into movie shorts by Weston Woods in the early 1960s: This Is New York, This Is Venice, This Is Israel and This Is Ireland.[2]
The This Is series was published in the United Kingdom by W. H. Allen & Co. and in the United States by The Macmillan Company, and in translation in several other countries. In 2003, after those series went out of print, the Rizzoli publishing firm began reissuing some of the titles, although not in the original publication order.[3] In these books, outdated facts were updated at the back of the book but the original artwork was preserved.

Miroslav Šašek
Miroslav Šašek was born on the 16th November 1916 in the Prague district of Žižkov. He was an architecture graduate and studied drawing and painting with Czech landscape artist Otakar Blažíček, and after completing his studies he provided drawings for newspapers and illustrated a large number of books, as well as designing puppets in collaboration with his first wife, Jindřiška.
In 1947 he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts, and when the Communists came to power in what was then Czechoslovakia he made the decision not to return to his homeland. He earned a living as a graphic artist (in advertising) and architect, and from 1951 he was employed in the Czech section of Radio Free Europe in Munich.
In 1957 he returned to Paris, beginning work on a children’s illustrated guide to that city – This is Paris – which was published in 1959 and succeeded by similar books on London (also 1959), Rome (1960), New York (1960), Edinburgh (1961), Munich (1961), Venice (1961), San Francisco (1962), Israel (1962), Cape Canaveral (1963), Ireland (1964), Hong Kong (1965), Greece (1966), Texas (1967), the United Nations (1968), Washington D.C.
