The Rich History of John Deere Implements
So much attention has been focused on John Deere tractors that we often overlook the fact that Deere & Company was a world leader in the manufacture of implements long before it became known for its tractors.
Founder John Deere would live to see the firm he founded operate the largest plow factory in the world. Yet, neither he nor his successor, Charles Deere, would witness a tractor bearing the family name.
During the first 77 years of the various companies John Deere was involved in (Deere was in several partnerships until the firm came under his control in 1851), the focus of the company was plows. Building on the success of the steel walking plow, Deere set out to diversify the variations of this implement. By 1851, the company was selling stubble plows in five widths (ranging from 9 to 14 inches) and breaker plows in four widths (16 to 23 inches). At this time, plow production reached 4,000 units, which coincided with Deere’s son, Charles, joining the company. Three years later, plow production shot up to 13,000 units.
