    Italian labels body FIMI and research firm GFK have published their annual consumption stats for Italy’s recorded-music market. They provide a fascinating contrast to the recent UK figures published by the BPI, for a couple of reasons.

    One is a similarity: increased prominence for women artists in the charts, with FIMI hailing a 300% increase in their representation in the top 20 albums of the year.

    At the time of writing we haven’t seen that full list to identify exactly how many artists that means, but we’ll update the online version of this story when we do. In the UK, women accounted for 47% of tracks that reached the top 10 last year.

    The second contrast to the UK stats is a big difference: the strength of home-grown music. In the UK, the BPI’s charts revealed a dearth of British artists in the upper ranks, but in Italy that trend is flipped on its head.

    The top 10 albums and singles of 2024 in Italy were a clean sweep by domestic artists, who also accounted for 84% of the top 100 albums of the year. A strong local scene is getting stronger – the latter metric was up 5% year-on-year.
