Due to the Jazz Fusion being played on the floors of most upfront discotheques in the late 1970s, D.J’s started looking for different styles to play and so we started to hear fast Mambo’s from TITO PUENTE and MACHITO and tracks like MAMA GUELA by PONCHO SANCHEZ etc... In the early 1980s a lot of the London Jazz D.J’s were mixing with World music D.J.’s who specialized in Afro Cuban and Brasilian such as DAVE HUCKER, TOMEK, JOHN ARMSTRONG and SUE STEWARD,and so a lot of knowledge was being shared. In the North of England, COLIN CURTIS had already been experimenting with Mambo’s at his famous session at a club called BERLIN.
Anyone interested in the scene in the 1980s will tell you that London Jazz D.J SYLVESTER was the master of Afro Cuban Jazz. He had records that the heaviest of collectors had never seen. By the late 1980s there were some phenomenal record dealers turning up the most astonishing Latin Jazz (predominantly Afro Cuban), and although a lot of heavy collectors had some great rare Brasilian records in their collection, it is only fair to mention that it was FAR-OUT record company owner JOE DAVIS that started a panic-buy of rare 60s Brasilian music on his many record bu
